Gavan O'Herlihy (April 29, 1954 – September 15, 2021) originated the role Chuck Cunningham, Richie and Joanie's star jock older brother on Happy Days, appearing in 10 episodes in the first season before being replaced in the role by Randolph Roberts.

Career[]

Gavan appeared in episodes of TV series such as Star Trek: Voyager, Twin Peaks, and China Beach. In addition, he appeared in movies such as Willow and Superman 3. In 1997, he appeared in the movies Top of the World and Prince Valiant and a 1/24/98 episode of Jonathan Creek. His most recent crdits include a July 2000 episode of 18 Wheels of Justice and the movies Command Approved (2000), Butterfly Man (2002), and Cruise of the Gods (2002 TV Movie). He has also appeared in the 1976 ABC-TV miniseries Rich Man, Poor Man and Tales From The Crypt. In 1994, he starred as John Garrideb in The Mazarin Stone from Granada TV's Sherlock Holmes series. The events of the story were rewritten and merged with The Adventure of the Three Garridebs.[1]

Gavan is the son of Irish actor Dan O'Herlihy.[2] He was an avid tennis player in his youth, even becoming the Irish National Tennis Champion.
